The Latin poem, O Maria Maris Stella, existing in manuscript in several 13th Century codices, constitutes the text of a celebrated anonymous Marian motet. Hawley's setting allows the verse to speak through the centuries, and has clothed the words in new harmonies, while endeavoring to maintain the timeless, universal aspects of the poetry.
